My Favorite Trips in Europe

If you don’t already know, I am a military brat and now a military wife, which has allowed me to live in Europe for the last 6 years! Being overseas has really sparked my love for traveling. Growing up I moved about every 2 years but I didn’t feel like we “traveled” much. So I have tried to take advantage of the travel opportunities since I’ve been over here. Now that we are about to leave Europe to move to Alaska and have no more trips planned I thought I would share a few of my favorite places with you out of the tons of places I have gone!

I’ll start with Berlin since I’m a little biased about the city. Before we got stationed in England we lived in Germany for three years and it was INCREDIBLE! I love the German people, the food, the culture, the ease of travel, even the language. I don’t think there was much about Germany that I didn’t like. I didn’t actually visit Berlin until we had moved to England so visiting Germany was almost like coming home. Berlin was my 3rd selfie trip since my hubby was deployed and I felt so safe being there even at night. I got really luck while I was there because the Festival of Lights was going on and that was a lot of fun to watch. The light shows are designed for some of the major monuments in the city and they play images projected onto the monuments. It was really impressive!

I’ve been to Edinburg 3 times since we’ve been in Europe. I honestly don’t know what it is about this city that I like so much but I really do love it! One of the nice things about the city is that its very compact. You don’t have to walk forever to get around to see and do things which I like and you can pretty much see the entire city from the castle. The other nice thing about Edinburgh is that there’s a variety of things to do.

The first time we went we got the Edinburgh pass, which got us into a lot of cool places like Camera Obscura. This is just a fun place of illusions but at the top they also have a live view of the town below through a camera made up only of mirrors…hard to explain but it was really cool!

There is also a hike you can do to get up to see King Arthurs Seat. We attempted this hike the first time we went and once we reached a point where we could see beyond the hill we were climbing, we realized we were definitely on the wrong hill and the right one was way off in the distance and way bigger than the one we were already struggling on SO we headed back. To my hubby’s relief I did not want to try again the next day on the correct hill 😛

I convinced the hubby to go to Edinburgh with me the first time because they have a Whiskey Experience there where you can get a tour of how whiskey is made and sample some whiskey from different regions in Scotland. Since I don’t drink whiskey the hubby got about 6-8 shots of whiskey all to himself! They have so much whiskey there though. They even have a room that is floor to ceiling full of different whiskeys. It was overwhelming lol

Not only is the city great but you can also do day tours from the city into the Highlands which are just beautiful rain or shine. If you’re able to I would recommend driving through the highlands instead of doing a bus tour only because that allows you to stop more often along the way to take pictures outside rather than through the glass of the bus. The bus does make a few stops along the way but still.

I ended up going to Edinburgh with a friend for the Christmas Market one year also. That time I went into the castle as well. But I’m going to tell you right now if the Christmas market isn’t in Germany, it’s not a Christmas market! The ones outside of Germany are more like winter carnivals rather than Christmas markets which focus more on  food and christmas decorations and gifts to see and buy.

A friend and I went to Dubrovnik together because its beautiful but also because it was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones. Now, I am not the type to go around looking to travel to film locations for shows and movies but this place was absolutely gorgeous so the fact that one of my favorite shows was filmed there just made it that much more fun! The photo above was taken after we rode the cable car which was worth all of our money for the view even though it wasn’t expensive. Theres a restaurant at the top which was expensive but we ate there anyway because we were SO hungry after our flight. Unfortunately the weather prevented the boats from going to Lokrum, which is the island to the left in the photo above but the city itself was still great.

We walked along the walls of the city to get some amazing views at sunset!

We even found a spot near our hotel where we could sit and watch the waves come in and out and a place to watch the sunset again.

I saved the most incredible trip for last! Iceland was just absolutely the most amazing place I’ve been so far for a lot of reasons. What allowed us to get the most out of this trip was doing a self driving tour through Nordic Visitor. We chose the South Iceland at Leisure package and don’t get me wrong this was expensive but its was WELL worth the money to get to see what you wanted when you wanted. You get a map and travel guide booklet with tons of information about things to see and do along the way. It is highly recommended that you do not try to save money by getting a little car. You really need to get an SUV! And if I remember correctly a GPS comes included with that along with a cell phone and I you can purchase a wifi puck to take with you which was also definitely worth it. They also included all of our accommodations in the package and you can chose the type of accommodations you want to stay in but we stuck to the basic type to save some money

The Northern Lights came out just enough for my camera to see them even though we couldn’t.

Another reason why I loved Iceland was because I got engaged there! It wasn’t too much of a surprise but it still made it that much more special for me.
